Phone and Email Scams

The phone scammers generally will call impersonating a co-op employee and will demand immediate payment over the phone via a debit or credit card and threaten disconnection.  Some will instruct the member to purchase a prepaid debit card and call back with the card number.  Some calls may seem legitimate because the scammers use “Caller ID Spoofing” to make the targeted member’s caller ID falsely read the cooperative’s name and number. West River Electric will not call and demand immediate payment over the phone via a debit or credit card.  If you are unsure if the caller is associated with West River Electric, hang up and immediately call our office at 605-393-1500 or 605-279-2135.

E-mail scams may appear to be an energy statement, invoice, or past due bill with a log-in link.  DO NOT click on the link as it will direct you to a compromised website that contains malware. West River Electric sends out a bill notification e-mails to those members who have a Smarthub account with us monthly.  That e-mail format will be the same each month, indicating the bill is ready for viewing.  Please only visit our Smarthub site at to view your bills.
